Meeting of the Executive Committee Meeting of the Community Club of Brookside—October 8, 2001
Attendees: Roland George, Sara Czarecki, Fran Plodkowski, Irene Daley, Jesse Smith, Cindy Slate, Jim O’Neill, Betty Conable, Sandy Almassy, Howard Helms, Lynda and Denis Menton.
Call to Order: Denis Menton called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Howard Helms read the minutes.
Amendments to the Bylaws: We will need to vote on this at the General Membership meeting in November. Howard Helms will give Sara Czarecki a set of mailing labels of the 2001 membership for sending letters to publicize the General Meeting.
Litigation: Denis read a letter that he had written to our New Jersey U.S. Senators protesting litigation such as the Filiberto suit for the Coombs Fill garbage dump. We will ignore the opportunity to pay $4500 to defend ourselves from the threat of litigation.
Rental property: Denis will talk with the tenant about his arrears, since no check was received since our last meeting a month ago. There is a basement wall cave-in that the tenant may repair, if he hasn’t done so already.
We still need to find and purchase a frame for the piano, so that it can be rolled in and out without losing its tune.
Denis announced that Betty Conable had agreed to continue to continue to serve as the rental agent for the Club. Denis took a show of hands as to whether we should pay the rental agent $2500 or $3000 per annum for her efforts. The vote was carried without evident dissent. Howard Helms asserted that if she were paid, we would have to report this salary to the IRS and to pay Social Security tax on it, since it is likely that U.S. and N.J. rules will require this. In view of this, Betty said that at least for the present she prefers not to receive a salary.
Social and Fundraising: Denis said that the Community Club probably will contribute its premises in February for a party, whose profits will be contributed to the family of the late Mr. Skidmore, who had facilitated several of the Community Club’s efforts.
Contrary to the minutes of the last meeting, the Club will not hold the Xmas tree-decorating party on Dec. 9 as scheduled and announced. Instead, the tree will be assembled and trimmed on Thursday, Dec. 6, starting at 6 AM. This event will include writing letters to Santa, who will arrive at the firehouse on Saturday, Dec. 8.
The Holiday Boutique plans are proceeding well for Dec. 17. Fran Plodkowski needs some help in setting up.
A caterer for the New Millennium party needs to be identified. Fortunately, this year’s DJ will cost $500 less than last year’s. Sandy Almassy and Cindy Slate will locate a caterer.
Building and Grounds: Jesse Smith says that the new watering and lighting systems have been installed. The fire alarm wiring was done. The ice machine is working again after a change to the power socket to which it is connected.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.
Next Meeting: The General Meeting of the membership of the Community Club of Brookside will be held on November 12, 2001, at 7:30 PM in the Community Club.
